Right. You can perform these ‘unroll’ commands in more advanced 3D programs like Rhino or Blender but you would also have to draw the entire 3D model of the pattern (probably not something you want to get into. In the CAD world calculating circles/arcs is pretty straight forward. Ovals/splines is pretty much where you start to end up on your own or get into 3D territory. Small changes to the three dimensional object can not only turn an arc into a spline but turn a spline with 1 or 2 foci into one with hundreds. The bezier curves that you use when you cut patterns are basically a ‘simplified’ set of splines so that you don’t have to figure any of this out. If you started doing 3D scans of the person you were making clothing for and used that to fit their clothing then you’d be into a whole different market. =P
