Just a few thoughts

#1

hi there! So i’ve been playing around with your program for the last day or so. Here are a few thoughts:

  1. When you select “inches” in your preferences there should be imperial sizes to go with that. I’ve taken a screen shot, which I’ll attach to this email. As you can see the pattern unit is set to inches, yet the sizing and height options are metric. I know imperial is a fucking headache to deal with (lol I am a Canadian and I know how this shit is, we are metric here but our neighbours are not. So many of us Canadians think in both metric and imperial).

  2. I’m working on filling out some standardized size information based on the Armstrong book. I’ll leave my files on here for people to download when I’m done.

  3. You should introduce grading into this.

  4. Tracing would be a good way around “slash and rotate”. Meaning allowing people to import photo files and trace them. Here is an example of what I’m talking about https://youtu.be/PF0pKzXToD0?t=4m4s

  5. A nice “perk” would be some sort of fabric simulator-ie imposing an image of the fabric over the pattern. Just to see how stuff will look like when it’s done

I will provide you with more feedback as I get to know your software.

Hey Julia! We’ve been at a design sprint and travelling since 13 April, so the team has been unavailable during this time. Thanks for your comments, my comments are inline below.

The multisize/standard size file formats are incomplete. We’re in the process of re-designing them. It looks like there will be two multisize files. One mutisize file option will use a base size plus ‘increments’ the second option will use a base size plus formulas to generate the range of sizes. Roman says we may even need a 3rd size just for the government size standards. Just be aware that trying to use the multisize/standard size measurements is not recommended. It doesn’t work right now and it will change drastically in the future.

  1. I’m working on filling out some standardized size information based on the Armstrong book. I’ll leave my files on here for people to download when I’m done.

This is great but you may have to re-do this work when the new multisize/standard file formats are developed.

  1. You should introduce grading into this.

The graded patterns will be generated from the multisize measurements in the Layout, after the multisize/standard file formats are developed.

  1. Tracing would be a good way around “slash and rotate”. Meaning allowing people to import photo files and trace them. Here is an example of what I’m talking about https://youtu.be/PF0pKzXToD0?t=4m4s

Hey lots of people want this feature too! — See the issue at https://bitbucket.org/valentinateam/valentina/issues/258/new-feature-tracing-mode It won’t be automatic, you’ll have to enter the base measurements from the pattern envelope and tell Valentina where to apply the measurements. Valentina designs are formulas stored in code. You create the code when you enter formulas. Simply importing an image doesn’t create any code. You’ll have to assist.

  1. A nice “perk” would be some sort of fabric simulator-ie imposing an

image of the fabric over the pattern. Just to see how stuff will look like when it’s done

Ah, you mean a scanned image of fabric which shows on the pattern pieces in Detail or Layout mode? You should create an issue here: https://bitbucket.org/valentinateam/valentina/issues There’s an issue for viewing in 3D on your 3D character where you can select textures (‘fabrics’ in 3D lingo) https://bitbucket.org/valentinateam/valentina/issues/336/new-feature-3d-create-garment-simulation, but that’s different than viewing the fabric on the 2D pattern pieces in Detail or Layout mode.

I will provide you with more feedback as I get to know your software.

Yes please keep sending your questions, error messages, ideas, etc. It helps us develop a great product.
